You do not need a big budget. You need the right order. Here is where a small Jamaican business should put its first marketing dollars — and what to skip until later.
First: the free things that make paid things work
Before any ad: a Google Business Profile that is complete, a WhatsApp Business number with a catalogue and auto-reply, and a way for a customer to pay you without a conversation (a payment link, a bank transfer box with your details). Ads sent to a business that is hard to reach are money thrown away.
J$20,000 a month, spent in this order
- J$8,000–12,000 on Google Ads if people search for what you sell. Two to three searches, one landing page, WhatsApp button at the top.
- J$5,000–8,000 on Meta click-to-WhatsApp ads for your best offer. Three ad variations; keep the winner.
- J$0 on content, J$0 on boosting posts — post from your phone twice a week for now.
What about radio, flyers and the newspaper?
They still work for some things — a supermarket opening, a church fundraiser, an event. They do not work for most services because nobody can act on them in the moment. If you use them, put your WhatsApp number in large type and nothing else.
If your customers are businesses
Skip the ads entirely at first. Reaching 40 businesses a day directly by email or WhatsApp with a short honest pitch costs less than any ad channel and talks to decision-makers, not scrollers. This is what IslandLeads was built for.
Measure one number
Cost per conversation. How much did you spend, how many people messaged or called? If you track nothing else, track that — it tells you what to do next month.
When to spend more
When you know your cost per conversation and how many conversations become sales. Until then, J$20,000 and a notebook beats J$100,000 and a guess.
